As a record-breaking heat wave is making its way across the US, here in Vernon we have a forecast today of a high of 32 degrees, clear skies, with a zero percent chance of precipitation. Sounds like a perfect day for the beach, as opposed to this day back in 1976, when the temperature dropped down to 6.1 degrees. The year before that, in 1975, Vernon reached a record high of 35.6 degrees.
So what have they done in New York City to help people deal with the deadly heat? They've set up a man-made beach along the East River in Queens, with more than 400 tons of sand trucked in to make a fake beach experience seem real.

They could use a cold snap right about now.
